After breaking up with her bad-news boyfriend, Reagan O’Neill is ready to leave her rebellious ways behind. . . and her best friend, country superstar Lilah Montgomery, is nursing a broken heart of her own. Fortunately, Lilah’s 24-city tour is about to kick off, offering a perfect opportunity for a girls-only summer of break-up ballads and healing hearts. But when Matt Finch joins the tour as its opening act, his boy-next-door charm proves difficult for Reagan to resist, despite her vow to live a drama-free existence. This summer, Reagan and Lilah will navigate the ups and downs of fame and friendship as they come to see that giving your heart to the right person is always a risk worth taking. A fresh new voice in contemporary romance, Emery Lord’s gorgeous writing hits all the right notes.

My review:

Falling in love is one of the most amazing experiences in the world. Oftentimes it’s with a person but it’s not limited to that. Everyone can fall in love even with a thing, especially if that thing means a lot to you. To me, it’s this book called Open Road Summer.

I fell in love with Open Road Summer the way a love song moves me the first time I hear it. An indescribable moment of connection, a spark that flows through my veins as the soulful rhythm lights me up inside and out. Alive and happy, just how being in love for the first time feels like.

Resembling a camera, Open Road Summer excellently captures the beauty of friendship and love. You don’t need to adjust the camera settings to get a great shot. Photo editing is also out of the question. The picture is as good as it is—natural light and all. Raw and imperfect, it reflects the true essence of the subject.

The characters are totally incredible. The main character, Reagan, is spunky, daring, and not afraid to speak her mind. But underneath that feisty outer surface is a broken and troubled soul. Then Reagan meets Matt Finch, a former star who joins her superstar best friend Dee’s tour as the opening act. He then becomes the highlight of her summer. With his boyish charm and sweet-as-funnel cake-smile, the sensible Matt is a good match for Reagan. Matt saw her through the broken version of herself, through her imperfections. He accepts Reagan’s vulnerability because he’s broken himself. Most of all, Matt made Reagan see her worth when she was blinded by her fears. THE FEELS! Reagan and Matt’s romance is unbelievably adorable! I liked that they took their time to know each other before going to the next level. Their relationship proves that love need not be rushed.

I really adore how Open Road Summer illustrates Reagan and Dee’s friendship. Their history explains their solid and priceless bond. Having known each other as friends for a very long time, Reagan and Dee act like sisters. They know everything about each other. The love in Reagan and Dee’s friendship goes beyond infinity and is the most authentic I’ve ever seen. Their bonding moments are comforting and heartwarming. Life is indeed so much better when you have a best friend who understands you deeply.

Another interesting thing about Open Road Summer is that it gives an exclusive behind the scenes access on celebrity life and what it’s like to be on tour. It’s really cool to discover that being a star is not all glitz and glamour. Oh and the swoon-worthy song lyrics in the story are precious! They made me smile and fangirl at a maximum level. 🙂

Emery Lord is a brilliant writer. With a realistic, stellar voice in contemporary YA, she is truly an author to watch! Her writing is magnificent—the kind of magnificent that makes you believe in magic and that, it exists in everyday reality. Words are coated with warm and sincere emotions that readers will, without a doubt, appreciate and put into heart.

Open Road Summer is a debut novel filled with infinitely beautiful and promising possibilities. Absolutely the perfect summer jam! Read this book NOW! 🙂

  1. YAY I am soooo glad you loved this! I just finished it last night and I already want to read it all over again. I woke up this morning and was sad I was finished haha!
I don’t even like country music but I just enjoyed so much about this book. LOVED Matt Finch and felt so much for Reagan… I loved how the drama wasn’t cattiness from Dee too. She was a genuinely nice person and bad things happened to her but it was out of her control.
Lovely review! SO many FEELS! 🙂
