A Bright and Lovely Sunday: Jennifer Niven in Manila!

If there’s one day I’d like to relive, it would be May 29, 2016 — Jennifer Niven’s signing in Manila. It was so colorful and bright and all the lovely things combined! ❤

Q&A with Jennifer

Q&A with Jennifer Niven

My fellow book bloggers and I attended a special Q&A with Jennifer where she talked about writing and her wonderful books. Jennifer’s sincere and soft-spoken nature was very admirable! I loved listening to her speak! ❤

Here are some interesting bits I’ve gathered from the Q&A:

*On adapting All the Bright Places into a screenplay, Jennifer said it was scary at first.

*Jennifer has a graduate degree in screenwriting.

*According to her, film doesn’t have as much space unlike in books.

*Readers are always the important thing for Jennifer.

*The All the Bright Places movie will start shooting in the Fall!

*For Jennifer, it’s important to have balance. When she’s on a writing break, she loves to dance, hike, go outside, read, and binge watch television. It’s recharging for her.

*Jennifer said that every book wants to be written differently.

*Writing Jack and Libby (in Holding Up the Universe) was a challenge.

*She creates a playlist for each of the characters.

*Jennifer kept surprising herself while writing Holding Up the Universe. Both she and her characters try to do the unexpected.

For more fascinating information, you may listen to the audio recording of the Q&A here.

Following the Q&A was the book signing! We all lined up to have our books signed. I felt everybody’s excitement as I waited to reach the front of the line!

When my turn came, Jennifer smiled at me, and I couldn’t believe that I was face to face with THE Jennifer Niven — New York Times Bestselling Author and a friend I made online in 2014 who I’ve wished to meet!

After I had a picture taken with Jennifer, I hugged her tightly and told her that she’s amazing. Then Jen surprised me with a gift! An ARC of Holding Up the Universe! Squeee!!! *flails* Oh and guess what, I have a cameo in Holding Up the Universe! Thank you, Jen, for making my dream of becoming a character in a book come true! 🙂

While our fellow bloggers are still having their books signed, the Hardest Selfie Ever crew grabbed the opportunity to take selfies! These selfies were not really difficult to take as we’ve gotten better at squeezing ourselves into the frame as the years go by. The hardest selfies we’ve ever taken are still at Gayle Forman’s and Jenny Han’s book signings! Haha! 😀

After the event, I went up to Jen and thanked her for visiting the Philippines and for being an inspiration to me. I couldn’t stop saying thank you because my heart was overflowing with gratitude, happiness, and all kinds of feels. When I hugged Jennifer, she shared her brightness with me, and infused a sense of hope that the coming days are going to be better and brighter. Jennifer IS all the colors in one, at full brightness. I will never ever forget this day! 🙂

To Jennifer, thank you very much for visiting the Philippines. You have no idea how happy I am that I got to meet you in person! We became friends on Twitter in late 2014 and after a year, we finally saw each other in real life! This time, I got to really hug you, and not just send you virtual hugs! I am also grateful for your writing advices and for constantly encouraging me to keep on writing. You make me bright and lovely! One day when I finish my book, you’ll be the first to know. ❤ I love you and I hope to see you again in the future! *hugs*

Event Recap: Victoria Aveyard Manila Book Signing

Last March 6, 2016, New York Times Bestselling Author Victoria Aveyard visited Manila for a book signing tour! My fellow book bloggers and I had a privilege to attend a Q&A with the author, and as always, it was a lot of fun! While waiting for Victoria, my friends and I chatted about the latest books and what we’ve been up to. It was really great to see them again after months of not seeing each other. Soon, Victoria arrived and everyone welcomed her with smiles and cheers.

The Q&A was wonderful! Victoria answered our questions with gusto and so much insight. I enjoyed listening to her talk about writing and the things she loves! You may listen to the full audio recording of the Q&A here. Special thanks to Kai of Amaterasu Reads for sharing the link of the audio recording! A Legendary Sunday: Marie Lu in Manila!

10502019_10152456676826914_9180124061306500860_n

National Book Store’s announcement that New York Times Bestselling author Marie Lu is coming to the Philippines set my heart into fangirling frenzy! It was early this year that I wished Marie Lu would visit the Philippines and it came true! In fact, I just came home from the Q & A / book signing hours ago. 🙂 Here’s a rundown of today’s bookish event!

Book display

A display of Marie Lu’s books

While waiting for the Q & A to start, my blogger friends and I caught up with each other as we always do, exchanging stories about what we’re up to these days, what we’re reading, and book recommendations! The happy and excited energy in the room escalated when Marie Lu arrived at the venue. Marie was so friendly. She answered all our questions with a smile on her face! We learned a lot about her writing process, the origin of her characters’ names (June and Day from the Legend trilogy!), and a whole lot more. You may listen to the full audio recording of the Q & A here.

Q and A

Q & A with Marie Lu

The book signing followed right after the Q & A. Meeting Marie in person was a joyful moment for me! As she was signing my books, I asked her what the Colonies accent sounds like. To my surprise, Marie replied that she doesn’t really know. This makes the accent more intriguing, don’t you think? It’s okay for me, though, that the accent does not have a definite sound because it leaves room for us to imagine what we think it sounds like. 🙂

Of course, selfies play a huge part in every book signing event. Some of you might have noticed the tradition that me and my blogger friends (Louisse of The Soul Sisters, Lyra of Defiantly Deviant, and Kate of The Bookaholic Blurbs) have that started at Gayle Forman’s signing, which we call the Hardest Selfie Ever. Why the name? Because the first time the four of us took a selfie, we had difficulty squeezing ourselves into the frame! Since we had fun, we decided to make Hardest Selfie Ever a habit every signing event. With each selfie we took in the succeeding signings, we experienced more struggles like the phone slipping from someone’s hand, the timer’s too fast, someone’s face was cut in half in the frame, etc. But as usual, we enjoyed it in spite of all the glitches! Now we’re on our 8th Hardest Selfie Ever and we have a new member: it’s Sab of Sab The Book Eater! 🙂

Today was undoubtedly incredible! I had a blast! To Marie Lu, the wonderful PRODIGY who writes LEGENDary stories, you are forever CHAMPION in our hearts! I am fortunate enough to attend a Q & A with both authors together with my fellow PH Book Bloggers. As usual, seeing my blogger friends is a delight!

A Very Perky Sunday: Stephanie Perkins in Manila!

Bright and euphoric is how I would describe July 6, 2014. Why is that so? It’s because International Bestselling Author Stephanie Perkins was in Manila for a book signing event!  For those of you who don’t know the author, she wrote the popular contemporary YA novels, Anna and the French Kiss and Lola and the Boy Next Door. Both books are beautifully written, uplifting, and swoon-worthy! I absolutely adore them!

My book blogger friends and I attended a Q & A with Stephanie Perkins where she answered questions from bloggers. I had a question for her, which I unfortunately wasn’t able to ask because of limited time. But it’s okay! I had a great time listening to Stephanie talk about her books, Etienne St. Clair (SWOON!), inspiration for her stories, she and her husband’s love story (*happy sigh*), travel experiences, and more. Stephanie’s supportive and super cool husband, Jarrod, was also present at the Q & A. He and Stephanie were so adorable! Definitely a OTP! ❤

Here are a few details I gathered from the Q & A:

*Stephanie’s new novel is under the horror genre. Hopefully, it will be coming out next year!

*Stephanie will definitely write more romance again. The horror novel was for her soul. She said, “Yeah, I’m writing something terrible and gross for my soul.”

*Someone asked Stephanie if one of her characters were to walk into the Q&A, who will it be and what will that character say, Stephanie answered, “Isla and Josh are both very big readers so it’s gonna be them who will probably be coming here together and keep to themselves. They’re pretty private people so you have to kind of get close to them. And they would be hanging out in the graphic novel section.”

*Etienne St. Clair was patterned after two actors. One was height and confidence based and the other one was facial, looks-wise. And then a lot of it was her husband, whom Stephanie put into all of the boys in her books. 🙂

*Stephanie draws inspiration from her own life, movies, and books that makes her swoon and fall in love again. It’s all about trying to capture that moment. She said, “When I write these things, I get to live them. I get to live in that moment and so I try to get that onto the page the best that I can.” It’s a combination of her husband and inspiration all around her and wanting to keep feeling that repeatedly as well as getting that in fresh ways.

*Stephanie is a people watcher. “If I see like a sweet moment between a couple with one tiny thing, I like to blow that tiny little moment like a huge thing,” she shared.

The public signing was held at National Book Store Glorietta 1 but I had to leave early so I was unable to attend. From what I have heard, the public signing was a huge success. 664 people showed up at the event and everyone had fun! Hooray!

Thank you very much National Book Store for making this perky event possible! All of us experienced the best kind of happiness. 🙂

P.S. We Love You, Jenny Han!

June 21, 2014, a Saturday filled with smiles, laughter, and delightful moments. When National Book Store announced that New York Times bestselling author Jenny Han is coming to Manila, I was one of those people very excited to meet her in person. I enjoyed reading her latest novel, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, and was so keen to learn more about it. I am privileged to have been invited to the bloggers forum (prior to the public signing) where my fellow book bloggers and I asked Jenny Han questions about writing, her books, celebrity crushes, etc. She responded to every question with utmost sincerity and great enthusiasm! All of us present at the forum had so much fun listening to Jenny speak. It was a truly fruitful event!

After the forum was the public signing at National Book Store Glorietta 1 where Jenny Han’s fans waited patiently for her. Their energy buzzed throughout the venue which was so exhilarating to witness! I really felt their love and support for Jenny Han. When it comes to book events like this, Filipino bookworms never fail to amaze me.

Thank you so much to the spectacular National Book Store for bringing Jenny Han to the Philippines! It was such a pleasure meeting her in person! Thank you also to Jenny for visiting our country. We hope to see you again someday! 🙂

Tahereh Mafi-Ransom Riggs-Veronica Rossi Philippine Book Signing Tour!

Veronica Rossi, Tahereh Mafi and Ransom Riggs book signing tour in National Book Store

National Book Store brings three New York Times bestselling authors—Veronica Rossi, Tahereh Mafi and Ransom Riggs—for book signing events on April 26 at 2 pm in the Glorietta Activity Center and on April 27 at 2 pm in The Gallery of Ayala Center Cebu.

Veronica Rossi is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Under the Never Sky trilogy, a post-apocalyptic young adult series. Foreign rights to the trilogy have been sold in over 25 territories and film rights have been optioned by Warner Bros. entertainment. Described by Examiner.com as “an unforgettable dystopian masterpiece,” and deemed as one of the Best Books of the Year by School Library Journal, Under the Never Sky follows the story of Aria, who meets Perry after being exiled from the enclosed city of Reverie because of a terrible incident. Their unlikely alliance forges a bond that will determine who will survive the Death Shop, a place full of cannibals and violent energy storms. Aria’s journey continues in Through the Ever Night and Into the Still Blue.

Tahereh Mafi first visited her Filipino fans in 2013. She is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Shatter Me, the first book in a trilogy, which has received positive reviews from Booklist, Kirkus Reviews and Publishers Weekly among others. Shatter Me is currently being sold in over 25 foreign territories and has been optioned for a movie adaptation by Twentieth Century Fox. Ostracized and incarcerated her whole life, seventeen-year-old Juliette is freed on the condition that she use her horrific abilities in support of The Reestablishment, a post-apocalyptic dictatorship, but Adam, the only person ever to show her affection, offers hope of a better future. The story of Juliette continues in the sequel Unravel Me, and the heart-stopping conclusion Ignite Me.

Ransom Riggs is the author of the bestselling fantasy illustrated with haunting vintage photography Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, which became part of the New York Times bestsellers list for 52 consecutive weeks. The movie adaptation is currently in production which will be directed by Tim Burton and penned by X-Men: First Class writer Jane Goldman. Sixteen-year-old Jacob journeys to a remote island off the coast of Wales as he tries to recover from the tragic death of his grandfather. There he discovers and explores the ruins of Miss Peregrine’s home where he meets the peculiar children who once lived there and finds out that they may still be alive and in danger. The sequel to the book, Hollow City, continues the journey of Jacob and his friends as they flee to London, the Peculiar capital of the world.

The events are made possible in partnership with Raffles Makati, Glorietta and Ayala Center Cebu.

Books by Veronica Rossi,Tahereh Mafi and Ransom Riggs are available in National Book Store and Powerbooks. Shop online and buy eBooks at nationalbookstore.com. Follow National Book Store on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram (@nbsalert) for updates on the latest events, promos and contests.
