A Bright and Lovely Sunday: Jennifer Niven in Manila!

If there’s one day I’d like to relive, it would be May 29, 2016 — Jennifer Niven’s signing in Manila. It was so colorful and bright and all the lovely things combined! ❤

Q&A with Jennifer

Q&A with Jennifer Niven

My fellow book bloggers and I attended a special Q&A with Jennifer where she talked about writing and her wonderful books. Jennifer’s sincere and soft-spoken nature was very admirable! I loved listening to her speak! ❤

Here are some interesting bits I’ve gathered from the Q&A:

*On adapting All the Bright Places into a screenplay, Jennifer said it was scary at first.

*Jennifer has a graduate degree in screenwriting.

*According to her, film doesn’t have as much space unlike in books.

*Readers are always the important thing for Jennifer.

*The All the Bright Places movie will start shooting in the Fall!

*For Jennifer, it’s important to have balance. When she’s on a writing break, she loves to dance, hike, go outside, read, and binge watch television. It’s recharging for her.

*Jennifer said that every book wants to be written differently.

*Writing Jack and Libby (in Holding Up the Universe) was a challenge.

*She creates a playlist for each of the characters.

*Jennifer kept surprising herself while writing Holding Up the Universe. Both she and her characters try to do the unexpected.

For more fascinating information, you may listen to the audio recording of the Q&A here.

Following the Q&A was the book signing! We all lined up to have our books signed. I felt everybody’s excitement as I waited to reach the front of the line!

Jennifer signing books

When my turn came, Jennifer smiled at me, and I couldn’t believe that I was face to face with THE Jennifer Niven — New York Times Bestselling Author and a friend I made online in 2014 who I’ve wished to meet!

After I had a picture taken with Jennifer, I hugged her tightly and told her that she’s amazing. Then Jen surprised me with a gift! An ARC of Holding Up the Universe! Squeee!!! *flails* Oh and guess what, I have a cameo in Holding Up the Universe! Thank you, Jen, for making my dream of becoming a character in a book come true! 🙂

While our fellow bloggers are still having their books signed, the Hardest Selfie Ever crew grabbed the opportunity to take selfies! These selfies were not really difficult to take as we’ve gotten better at squeezing ourselves into the frame as the years go by. The hardest selfies we’ve ever taken are still at Gayle Forman’s and Jenny Han’s book signings! Haha! 😀

I couldn’t stop saying thank you because my heart was overflowing with gratitude, happiness, and all kinds of feels. When I hugged Jennifer, she shared her brightness with me, and infused a sense of hope that the coming days are going to be better and brighter. Jennifer IS all the colors in one, at full brightness. I will never ever forget this day! 🙂

I am also grateful for your writing advices and for constantly encouraging me to keep on writing. You make me bright and lovely! One day when I finish my book, you’ll be the first to know. ❤ I love you and I hope to see you again in the future! *hugs*

Event Recap: Victoria Aveyard Manila Book Signing

Last March 6, 2016, New York Times Bestselling Author Victoria Aveyard visited Manila for a book signing tour! My fellow book bloggers and I had a privilege to attend a Q&A with the author, and as always, it was a lot of fun! While waiting for Victoria, my friends and I chatted about the latest books and what we’ve been up to. It was really great to see them again after months of not seeing each other. Soon, Victoria arrived and everyone welcomed her with smiles and cheers.

The Q&A was wonderful! Victoria answered our questions with gusto and so much insight. I enjoyed listening to her talk about writing and the things she loves! KMR in PH! [Recap + Giveaway]

My contemporary fangirl heart exploded with joy when National Book Store announced that Katie Cotugno, Melissa Kantor, and Robyn Schneider were coming to the Philippines for a book signing event. Charged with excitement, my blogger friends and I attended a special Q&A with the authors last July 5th.

Book signing stage

As we waited for Katie, Melissa, and Robyn to arrive, we mingled and caught up with each other, talking about books and anything under the sun. The three authors soon entered the venue, and we all went into serious fangirl mode. My heart drummed with elation when I saw Robyn Schneider! She’s like the brightest sunshine ever–so bubbly and adorable. 🙂

Q&A_collage

The Q&A was a lot of fun! Here are some interesting bits that I have gathered:

*Melissa would love to do historical fiction.

*Katie started How to Love at the age of 16.

*Katie kind of fell into young adult.

*Melissa said that it’s important to figure out a process that works for you.

*All of Robyn’s leading guys are portraits of herself.

*Melissa loves writing romance.

*Writing contemporary helps Katie to understand the world.

*Robyn loves writing pop culture references.

*Katie’s 3rd book is an untitled tragic romance coming out in Spring 2016. It’s a a pop star book set in the 1990s and has a star-crossed romance!

*Robyn tries to be honest. She writes normal.

*Robyn hates hash tags. #IHateHashTags

KMR! 🙂

Katie, Melissa, and Robyn were all wonderful! I enjoyed chatting with them as they signed my books. Robyn was so delighted to see my well-loved copy of The Beginning of Everything with sticky notes of my favorite quotes and my thoughts about the story. She also gave me writing advice, which I will forever keep in mind. Here it goes: “Write the book you want to send to your sixteen year-old self.” I was completely blown away with it! Words like that mean so much to me, and I’m beyond grateful that I have met (and hugged!) Robyn Schneider in person. She is truly an inspiration!

June 21st was fantastic for bookworms in Manila as it was the day of New York Times Bestselling Author Leigh Bardugo’s book signing! Many wished for Leigh to visit the Philippines and of course, the wonderful National Book Store made it come true! 🙂

Leigh Bardugo Q&A

Q&A with Leigh Bardugo

My fellow bloggers and I attended a Q&A and I’d love to share with you the information I’ve gathered from the event. Here it is:

*Leigh would love to write with Laini Taylor and JK Rowling.

*Leigh has a horror story in the anthology, Slasher Girls & Monster Boys that is coming out in August.

*Leigh enjoys stories set in our world with a fantasy element.

*Leigh would never cut a steamy scene!

*Leigh is a huge Game of Thrones fan!

*Russia felt like a good fit for her world.

*The setting of Six of Crows existed in Leigh’s mind before she wrote it.

*Shadow and Bone is a very classic “chosen one” story.

*Leigh hopes we like Six of Crows!

*Leigh might write a story about Sturmhond. According to her, it won’t happen on a few years.

*Leigh used to be a makeup and special effects artist.

*Leigh realized that no matter how old you get, no matter how smart you think you are, the fear of the dark never really goes away.

*She meant for the Darkling to be sexy. 🙂

*The Darkling is a main love interest.

*Leigh set out to write characters, not love interests.

*There’s a possibility for a novella about Alina’s origins!

*Leigh created a language to suit the moment of the world.

*Leigh wanted the language to be accessible to the reader.

*Leigh has gotten braver in her world-building.

*She literally has her dream job now.

If you wish to listen to the audio recording of the Q&A, you may access it here.

After the Q&A, we bloggers had the opportunity to meet Leigh personally at the book signing. Leigh was so kind and friendly! She asked me who my favorite character is in the Grisha Trilogy and I honestly told her that I haven’t read her books yet. I wanted to vanish into thin air as soon as I said those words! But you know what? Leigh was totally cool with it! I said I’ll read her books soon and she responded, “I hope you like them!” in a cheerful manner that made me more excited to read the Grisha Trilogy.

Event Recap: E. Lockhart in Manila!

New York Times Bestselling author, E. Lockhart, visited the Philippines this month for two book signing events–one in Manila and another in Cebu. Yesterday was the Manila signing, which I delightfully attended. I loved her books, Fly on the Wall and We Were Liars (5-star review here) so I was really excited to meet the author in person.

Here’s a rundown of what happened at yesterday’s awesome bookish event:

Q&A with E. Lockhart

Q&A with E. Lockhart

Emily answered questions at a special Q&A gathering with book bloggers. She’s a deep thinker, you guys! She would pause to reflect on every question. And what emerged after a moment of rumination were words overflowing with profound wisdom. You may listen to the audio recording of the Q&A here.

We bloggers lined up to have our books signed at the end of the Q&A. When it was my turn, Emily and I chatted a little about writing. I mentioned to her that I’m working on a contemporary YA. “Good for you!” was Emily’s encouraging reply. I requested her to write down an advice for me. On my copy of We Were Liars, she inscribed, “Keep writing.” Although short and sweet, the message meant a lot for an aspiring writer. It is additional motivation to push on with what I love doing the most. ❤

Event Recap: Lang Leav in Manila!

LANG LEAV SIGNING BANNER

For the month of December, National Book Store brings Lang Leav, bestselling author of poetry books Love and Misadventure and Lullabies to the Philippines for a book signing tour! Fans of Lang Leav expressed their excitement on social media as news broke out that the well-loved contemporary writer and artist is coming to the country. Well, who wouldn’t be thrilled to meet Lang? She’s AMAZING. Her poems speak to the reader’s soul and fills the heart with all kinds of feels. Her words have touched so many people’s lives including mine. 🙂 Without further ado, here’s a rundown of the fun bookish event on December 7th!

Forum1_editedI had the opportunity to attend a Q & A with Lang Leav where she eagerly answered questions from bloggers. Her answers were brief yet insightful. We learned a lot about Lang and her writing even with a few words. Wonderful, yeah? Plus, her accent is awesome! 🙂

Forum collage

Q & A with Lang Leav

Here’s what we learned about Lang from the Q & A:

*She doesn’t really have a technique in writing poems. She just writes from instinct.

*When asked how she balances her time for her several passions such as art, fashion, and poetry, she said it’s the common misconception that she does all these things at once. She did the fashion many, many years ago, the same with art. The last two years have been about illustrations for the books and focusing on writing projects. “Writing has really taken over in the last couple of years,” she shared.

*Lang doesn’t really have a writing process. She said, “I guess I just write when I can, when I feel like it.” Lang writes generally at night, as she feels it is more for creativity. She doesn’t really have a set rule for that.

*Lang has spent the last couple of years with her poetry online and interacting with her readers. Her inspiration for her poems comes from the stories the readers tell her. Lang said, “I get a lot of sad stories and I guess my inspiration comes from that.”

*Love and Misadventure‘s success made the writing process for Lullabies easier for Lang because by then, she had already secured a publisher. That part was much easier because she didn’t have to go at it alone. In terms of writing, she was really writing anyway. “I like putting out new material for my readers. And pretty soon I had enough material for another book,” she stated.

*When asked if there was ever a time when she had to make a choice between artwork and poetry, Lang’s reply was: “I think in terms of choices, I’ve always just gone with my gut feeling and what I felt was working for me.” When the writing started taking off, it was clear to Lang that it was gonna be the forerunner because the response that she got for it was much, much bigger than she ever had for her artwork. And now it’s great that she has done the two because she likes to put them side by side. She thinks it’s really complimentary in the books.

*Bestselling Filipino author Noreen Capili asked Lang if there was ever a time when after finishing a poem, Lang felt that she has written a particular line or a poem before. And if yes, how does Lang reinvent herself herself without compromising the distinct voice. Lang’s response to that was: “I think when you do write a poem, you do get that feeling of deja vu sometimes. I guess you just got to weigh it up and down, and sit and think, ‘Was that too similar to something that I’ve said before or that something someone else has said before?’ And I think you just gotta find that balance and it’s really looking at it and making a call.”

*Lang has got another poetry book on its way. (HOORAY!!! *throws confetti*)

*Lang is halfway through a novel that she’s writing but she doesn’t know if that’s gonna have a 2015 release date.

*Lang loves it when someone reads her poem and comes up with an interpretation far from what she really means. She said, “I think it’s really fantastic that someone can take a poem and look at it in so many different ways. And I think that’s the beauty about poetry. You’re the protagonist, which means that you can put yourself into that poem.”

*Writing poems is just something that Lang has always done. Writing is her way of getting her feelings out. She tends to be more prolific when she’s going through a tough time. Lang cited an example in which her best friend’s mother passed away in 2007. That was a really, really tough year for her. She draws a lot from the incident as well for the sadness because her best friend’s mom was like a second mother to her.

*A blogger asked Lang what piece of art or poetry does she most attribute her success as an artist and poet. She answered, “I think it’s been a combination of a lot of things.” Lang’s most popular poem ever would be Souls (the one about “goodnight”). She really likes it now than when she first wrote it and was surprised by the popularity of it. “I wrote that when I was still in a long distance relationship with Michael (Faudet) when he was living in New Zealand and I was in Australia. And every time we spoke on the phone, after we hung up the phone, there was like this horrible silence and this void and that was the inspiration for Souls.”

*Lang’s favorite saying or wisdom that she always brings with her: “Your words are your power. Never forget your words.”

You may listen to the audio recording of the Q & A here.

While waiting for the Q & A to start, my blogger friends and I caught up with each other as we always do, exchanging stories about what we’re up to these days, what we’re reading, and book recommendations! The happy and excited energy in the room escalated when Marie Lu arrived at the venue. Marie was so friendly. She answered all our questions with a smile on her face! We learned a lot about her writing process, the origin of her characters’ names (June and Day from the Legend trilogy!), and a whole lot more. You may listen to the full audio recording of the Q & A here.

Q and A

Q & A with Marie Lu

The book signing followed right after the Q & A. Meeting Marie in person was a joyful moment for me! As she was signing my books, I asked her what the Colonies accent sounds like. To my surprise, Marie replied that she doesn’t really know. This makes the accent more intriguing, don’t you think? It’s okay for me, though, that the accent does not have a definite sound because it leaves room for us to imagine what we think it sounds like. 🙂

Of course, selfies play a huge part in every book signing event. Some of you might have noticed the tradition that me and my blogger friends (Louisse of The Soul Sisters, Lyra of Defiantly Deviant, and Kate of The Bookaholic Blurbs) have that started at Gayle Forman’s signing, which we call the Hardest Selfie Ever. Why the name? Because the first time the four of us took a selfie, we had difficulty squeezing ourselves into the frame! Since we had fun, we decided to make Hardest Selfie Ever a habit every signing event. With each selfie we took in the succeeding signings, we experienced more struggles like the phone slipping from someone’s hand, the timer’s too fast, someone’s face was cut in half in the frame, etc. But as usual, we enjoyed it in spite of all the glitches! Now we’re on our 8th Hardest Selfie Ever and we have a new member: it’s Sab of Sab The Book Eater! 🙂
